Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin has been meticulously restored by David Chipperfield Architects. The project aimed to preserve the building’s original design while modernizing its functionality.

To ensure the integrity of Mies van der Rohe’s vision, the restoration team adopted a “surgical” approach. Over 35,000 building components were carefully dismantled, restored, and reinstalled in their original positions. This meticulous process balanced the need for modern updates with the preservation of the building’s historical significance.

Before the renovation, the gallery hosted the exhibition “Sticks and Stones,” which celebrated the building’s architectural legacy. The restored Neue Nationalgalerie now stands as a testament to Mies van der Rohe’s enduring influence on modern architecture.
